7/4/11 Weekend Independence Day Stingray Matagorda, Texas
Even though I hate fishing holidays due to the crowds the surf report stated it was going to
be flat. WRONG but we had already had loaded up and spent the gas to get there.
We went down the beach past the bad sand and past all the people and made it to the
high banks. We found a place that looked productive and set up camp. We quickly set
up camp and set out some long drops. Te current was ripping too the east and we had
the line back on the beach way too quickly. NOT Good! This time we put heavier
weights and made the drops shorter. This time they stayed out. I also set up
some castables and they were holding too. We kept the seaweed off as much as
we could but eventually at 2:30 in the morning the last line was eventually
brought in. Off to the Tentcots we went until the morning.
Monday morning we were met with mosquitoes and fresh weed on the beach.
We packed and off we went further down the beach we went. We met up
with Paul and Tim heading back in and said the 17 mile was about the same.
We turned around and not far from where we were talking we saw birds
hitting the water. It was mullet and we got excited. We set up camp and out
went the rods. We caught some good mullet in the first gut and a BIG whiting
on shrimp. We reeled in and out went the fresh mullet. An hour or so later the
whiting line started to sing. Albert picked up the rod and set the hook!
Fish ON! after a very good fight we had this huge stingray on the beach.
He never stopped swimming and we thought it was a good shark until it was laddered.
It measured out to be 52" wide and 74" long. I'm going to guess that it weighed
around 150 pounds. It was released to fight again. It would have been good bait
but I could not fit it into both of my ice chests. The ray was not our targeted
species but it was better than a SKUNK!
Team C.B.F. scores again!
I thank God for blessings he has given this family!
