Surf and The Dirty Pelican
High Island, Texas

Surprise BU!

Here we go again. You know where we went. We know where the fish are. The hardest thing about catchingbigfish is finding them. We arrived on the beach around 2:00 pm. Yes, 2:00 pm. Woke up to a breakfast of 3 over easy eggs, crispy hash browns (just the way I like them) and 1/2 pound of bacon with four orange marmalade smeared buttered toast on the side. I took my sweet time eating a great meal then hurried to the beach. We missed our friend Jezmo and JR was waiting for us. Sorry guys.

We headed to HI because our friend Jezmo was slaying the reds on the Dirty Pelican.

Shortly after we arrived on the beach Jolly Roger hooks up to a really nice Bull red.

Bull Red #1 37"
Anthony strikes first again! He manages to get a nice fish on a cast crab.

Bull Red #2 40"
After yaking out a fresh bait the boy manages to hook up to this fish. I hesitated in getting this rod because he took that bait out so far that I really did not want to reel it in.
The new harness and boat rod we bought the day before worked out wonderfully.

Bull Red #3 39"
The boy is up buy two fish when I see one of the kayaked rods twitch a little.
I slowly walk over and tighten the line right when the stout rod bends over in two.
FISH ON!!!

Bull Red #4 37"
Anthony had just gotten back from kayaking a bait when the rod we just took out starts to scream.
Man the action is really starting to pick up and so are the mosquitoes.

Bull Red #5 41"
We were debating on leaving due to the little Texas blood S#$kers eating us alive when another rod takes off.

Bull Drum #1 48" long with a 34" girth.
Still being eaten buy mosquitoes we decide to hack it out just a bit more. Glad we did.
Take a look at the biggest BU I have caught in a long time. We caught it off a casted rod with a crab on the hook. 48 inches long and it had a 34-inch girth. My 50# Berkeley digital scale said it weighed 51.6 pounds but it felt much heavier than that. I estimated it to weigh 60-65 pounds.
According to the fish length/girth calculator on this web site this fish weighs approximately 69 pounds.

My hand spread open measures 9 inches across. This fish's tail was at least 11 inches wide.

Bull Red #6 42"
Now we can not take it anymore and we start to put up our gear.
Anthony hears something and starts running down the beach. Obviously he beat me to the rod because I can't hear worth a darn.

Bull Red #7 39"
Buy the time I knew it he was off again.
This time I gave chase but it was too late!
He is not smiling he's laughing!

Bull Red #8 38"
After a few minutes I walked over to a rod I was going to put up and it starts to scream.
This one's is mine I yelled!

Buy this time we were packed but not really ready to stop fishing. After a few beach sandwiches in the truck we decided to head to the Dirty Pelican Pier. Once there we encountered two old friends, Tommy and Fernando so the BS start to get thick quick.

Bull Red #9 40"
It did not take long before we had this fish on the pier.
Tommy and Fernando are getting into the photo action.

Bull Red #10 39"
While I was not paying attention the boy hooks up to this fish.
It must have been because I was re-tying a shock leader on a rod that Anthony broke off on.
The run was long and strong. I believe this could be our first shark run of the year.
Here sharky, sharky, sharky!

Bull Red #11 45"
Anthony had one more chance at getting the biggest redfish of the day and he did. Check out the size if this monster. This picture does not do justice for this fish. It had a girth on her. Probably weighed 35+ ponds.

Now for the REPORT!

I am going to keep this short. We landed a total of 11 bull redfish and 1 Big Ugly. We used crabs, mullet and fresh whiting for bait. Most were caught on yaked out baits. We did manage to catch some off of casted baits late in the day. We hardly caught anything early in the day but once it started to get dark the action picked up. It must have been the moon. The tide has now come back up to normal. We managed to catch some whiting on fish bites and the mullet were bought at the Dirty pelican. They had the freshest bait I have seen in a vary long time. All the fish were from 37 to 48 inches long.

Team C.B.F's scores again!

I thank God for blessings he has given this family!
