In search of BU - Port Lavaca Bound
Port Lavaca, Texas

The first thing I would like to do is Thank GOD for the blessings he has given this family and friends and the ability too do the things we enjoy. With me having several days off and almost everybody working I had to venture out by myself. Woke up Tuesday without much too do. I ran an errands here and there, picked up some crabs and decided to go somewhere other than the surf. I checked my records and realized that I had not been to several places in a while that usually produce this time of year. I headed out around 2ish to Port Lavaca. I not being too much af a hurry I get the first rod in the water around 4. People came in and out and I asked if anyone had been catching any BIG drum and the most common answer was NO! I still had hopes. The day/night was perfect and I had confidence. I waited until dark and nothing much was going on. A little boy named Chris came on the pier and I was impressed by his ability to cast and catch fish. He saw the crabs and asked if I was looking for bull drum and he could catch a fish with me. I said he sure may. Anther little guy (Dustin) asked if he could get the next one after that and I said for sure. Now the pressure was on to get these rookies onto a BIG fish. I checked all the baits and place them in my most active spots and we waited another 20 minutes and we had our fish on. We at CATCHINGBIGFISH.NET truly believe that our children are the future of fishing. We strive to provide learning experiences, family fellowship and opportunities for young people interested in sport fishing. We as parents need to teach our Children not only to gain knowledge about fishing, but learn to respect wildlife and the outdoors. Now for the rest of the story! Total catch was 13 BU ranging from 28 to 45 inches long. Two Rookies caught there first and second biggest fish ever. First fish of the day. I did not want this trip to be a skunk so I decided to handle this fish. The rookies were ready but I was not just yet. It turned out to be a respectable 43 incher. Not bad for the first fish.

Not to much later the second rod starts to run. Chris must have been watching my rods because he was right behind me when I was ready to hand him the rod. With a little coaching and a bit of assistance he had this fish on the pier in short order. Chris was determined to pick up his fish like I did for the picture. He may have gotten a bit dirty in the process. WTG Chris! I bet your grandpa is really proud of you.

After checking the baits and throwing out the last rod we had a breather for around 30 minutes then all of a sudden a fish was on! Without any assistance but a bit on instruction Dust was fighting his first big fish. He did very well and this 41” BU is what he got for his efforts. WTG Dustin! I bet your dad and Uncle Louie are really proud of you.

We were there BSing and Chris says there is a fish on that line. Without the drag going off and line going slack it looked like we ahd nothing going on but after seeing Chris cast and fish I decided to take a better look. As I did I saw a little tap on the rod so I picked up the rod and waited until I felt the fish. Chris was right. It had this 42 inch BU! This kid really reminds me of my boys when they were young.

Taking turns like I promised the next fish was for Chris. This fish was a little tougher on him but he managed just fine and in the same nigh he topped his previous largest BU with this very nice 42 incher. Thanks for helping him out an teaching him how to fish grandpa.

With the knight getting slow Dustin went home and took a bath but he did get back in time to hook our next fish. He caught himself anther good fish. This fish stretching a respectable 42 inches.

I had a heck of a run then while fighting him it felt like I had lost the fish but I still had some resistance. I though I was bringing in an oyster but this is what we had at the end of the line. This very messed up BU had a deformity on his back. This is not the first time I have caught a fish out there. Should people really be eating fish caught out of Lavaca Bay? I’m not going too. Maybe there is just a bit too much mercury in the water. We called this fish “George Lopez” because of his big head and all.

We caught several smallish fish after the boys went home but then all of a sudden the catching turned on again. I was fighting one fish when it seemed that we were tangle on another line. We weren’t! Can you say DOUBLE? Charles (Dustin’s Dad) with two respectable 40” plus BU’s?

Late that night I got slow but all of a sudden on of the lines goes slack. Check what I had. This is a huge 45 inch BU. This fish was heavy. maybe 50 pounds or so.

This must a school of BIG fish. The next one was also 45 inches or so but with a huge head on it. I had a hard time lifting this one off the deck. I bet this fish went at least 60 pounds or more. After catching this fish I decided to pack it up and go home.

I just might have too get me a scale and start weighing these fish again.
